Commissioning Week
I came to Annapolis in 1993 and, like so many who arrive here, never quite left. More than thirty years later, I still live in the heart of the historic district, in a townhouse built in 1850, and I still find new corners of this town to love.
My Annapolis is lived on the water. I keep a boat here, and you’ll often find me out on my paddleboard at first light. For the past six years, one of my greatest joys has been sponsoring midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy, opening my home to young people far from their own families. I also serve on the boards of the Maryland Federation of Art and the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, which keeps me close to the artists, neighbors, and friendships that make this town what it is.
Ask me my favorite Annapolis moment and I’ll ask you what month it is. In spring, it’s the May Day flower baskets on front doors and the St. John’s versus Naval Academy croquet match on the college green. During Commissioning Week, it’s the Blue Angels thundering over the Severn. In summer, it’s paddling Ego Alley at sunrise, before the town wakes. And in December, it’s the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade and a walk down Snowflake Alley.

Travel has always been my greatest teacher, and it taught me that a place comes alive through its people. So I don’t begin by asking what you’d like to see; I begin by asking what you’d like to experience. Then I share Annapolis the way I would with a dear friend coming to stay: the right room, a table where you feel at home, an evening on the water, and time to wander on your own.
